In the 1930's, Mama Chole was a cook for a large ranch in the Leakey area.
The recipes were passed down to her grand son Jimmy who has operated
5 star restaurants in Houston. Jimmy also has great burgers with an
assortment of garnishments and a mouth watering chicken fried steak.

Kayaking (Top)
Kayak and Tube Rental, Sales, and Kayak Shuttle Service
Come by our Livery on River Road (CR 348) and participate in the newest rage on the Frio.
Kayaks are becoming more popular since they are readily available and less expensive. Courtesy is a must when kayaking. Tubers have the right-of-way since the kayakers have better control of their vessel. We now have Kayaks for Sale or rent.
Kayaks are the new thrill on the Frio these days. There has been a remarkable trend toward kayaking in the past two years. The river should be 50 cfs or higher to provide decent kayaking. The river bottom is hard on the kayaks below that level. You may check the river flow at any time by clicking the link on the Main Menu to the left.
Tubing (Top)
Tubing is the major warm weather attraction to our Canyon. To be carried by the cool, crystal clear, spring fed waters of the Frio River through the Cypress, Pecan, and Oak that line the river is beyond explanation. You can't help but leave your frustrations on shore.
Canoeing has been a favorite for; well who knows how long. I'm sure the native people of our canyon utilized the Frio for commerce and pleasure. You get that feeling of deja vu when you traverse through the rapids and over the pools.
Tubing has been popular on the Frio River since the first flat tire on a model T Ford. An old cowboy blew it up, got in it, and woke up miles from his horse. The walls of Neal's Cafe are a modern pictograph of the last 75 years on the Frio. From bloomers to bikinis, the pictures tell the story. Be careful! You'll get hooked on the food.
Places to get tubes in Concan are as follows:
- Bee's Camp
- River Oaks Resort
- Seven Bluffs Cabins
- Concan General Store
- Neal's Lodges
- Cold River Junction
- Frio Country Store
The Friends of The Frio have a river cleanup the first weekend after Labor Day every year. This year was very disappointing. There was an extra ordinary amount of trash on the bottom and on the banks of the river.
Please don't litter. Please take a container with you for your trash and use it. The law enforcement in this canyon is tough on litterers and the judge is a hanging judge when it comes to trashing his river.
Canoeing (Top)
Canoeing has been popular on the Frio since before that old cowboy and his Model T tube. During the wet months, canoeing is a great experience, gliding under the cypress boughs and through the rapids. I have found that the water is best for canoeing when it is above 100 cfs (cubic feet per second). You may check the river flow at any time by clicking the link to the left on the Main Menu.
Be careful of the tubers. You have control of your vessel. They don't.

SUNSET BAT FLIGHT TOUR
830-966-2320
Concan is home to one of the largest Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) populations in North America. Mid March thru Mid Sept. they exit their cave at sunset and travel far and wide in search of food; usually their weight in insects. They are a blessing in this area for keeping the insect population to a minimum.
Meet at the ranch gate and you will be escorted to the cave to watch the mass exit of these beautifully aerobatic airborne mammals. $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for under 13 years, and under 5 years are free. Call for reservations and time to meet, as it changes with the seasons.
